New Jersey NGO launches initiative to help skilled immigrants settle in the Garden State

NEWARK, N.J. — Choose New Jersey, a nonprofit NGO focused on primarily business development, is shifting focus now towards accommodating migrant workers. The state and federally funded agency is seeking vendors to provide concierge services for highly skilled immigrants relocating to the state.

The initiative aims to assist legal immigrants with housing, employment support, English language services, and cultural orientation. The new program is a slight shift in policy from the organization’s role of bringing new businesses to the state.

“This initiative positions New Jersey as a national leader in workforce innovation,” said Gov. Phil Murphy. “By offering skilled immigrants critical support, we’re strengthening our economy, empowering our communities, and reinforcing New Jersey’s status as ‘The World’s State.’”

The program is designed to help skilled professionals transition smoothly into New Jersey’s workforce. Foreign-born residents make up 24% of the state’s population and nearly 30% of its labor force, with immigrant-owned businesses generating over $4 billion in revenue.

The NGO is headed by Wesley Matthews, an ally of Governor Phil Murphy. The two met in Germany while Murphy was serving as a U.S. Ambassador to the European nation.

Choose New Jersey, originally founded by former Gov. Chris Christie, has seen leadership shifts under Murphy’s administration, putting Murphy allies into key positions.

The organization’s marketing efforts in 2024, funded by $12 million in state and federal grants, expanded the “This Is New Jersey” campaign to attract businesses and workers globally.

According to tax records, 21% of the agency’s revenue is spent on payroll, including 6% on executive six-figure salaries and compensation. Matthews earns over $500,000 annually.
