FORKED RIVER, N.J. — A distressed deer suffering from a suspected fibroma was rescued after concerned residents alerted the Associated Humane Societies/Popcorn Park Shelter.
Shirley and Dan Costello of Heritage Point first reported the animal’s condition, describing a tumor on its face. The shelter had already been tracking the deer, having received similar reports from residents Gene Mucha and Michael Bhatt. Since the animal remained mobile, the shelter advised contacting the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife and the USDA for assistance.
When the deer was later found lying down, Animal Control Officers Chris Wight and Maria responded. The weakened state of the deer allowed them to intervene, covering its head with a sheet to keep it calm before securing it in a transport crate.
The deer was safely taken to the shelter’s clinic for evaluation. “It’s a reminder of the kindness we owe to the animals who share our world,” the shelter wrote in a statement.
This coordinated rescue highlights the impact of community vigilance in protecting local wildlife.
