Trenton, NJ – The Senate Higher Education Committee has approved legislation S-3696, which is sponsored by Senator Joe Cryan. The bill requires higher education institutions and for-profit colleges to inform the Higher Education Student Assistance Authority when a student’s loan is discharged.
The legislation aligns with a federal relief program that discharges federal loans or requires refunds when schools close or engage in misconduct. This initiative is intended to ensure state offices are notified when students in New Jersey qualify for these reimbursements.
In addressing the issue, Senator Cryan noted the importance of protecting students from fraudulent practices. He highlighted the need for New Jersey to provide students with the necessary information and tools to safeguard against the exploitation by profit-driven educational entities.
A related bill, S-3731, also advanced by the committee, proposes a Student Tuition Recovery Fund. This fund would compensate students who suffer financial losses from fraud or closures of for-profit colleges. Supported by fees from the colleges, the fund would reimburse tuition paid through private loans or personal finances.
