TRENTON, N.J. — The New Jersey State Police are calling for community volunteers to join the Domestic Violence Response Team (DVRT), a program aimed at assisting survivors of domestic abuse. The initiative seeks to enlist trained civilian advocates to work collaboratively with NJSP stations statewide to provide immediate crisis support.
The DVRT is active around the clock and engages specially trained volunteers who offer comfort and guidance to survivors. The team works closely with local domestic violence service providers to offer information, resources, and emotional support at NJSP stations. Volunteers help survivors with safety planning and inform them of their legal rights, including the option to obtain a Temporary Restraining Order.
According to the State Police, volunteers must be at least 18 years old, possess a valid driver’s license, and have reliable transportation. Additionally, applicants must undergo background checks and fingerprinting and complete a mandatory training program to qualify for the role.
The program emphasizes a non-judgmental approach, with DVRT volunteers playing a key part in empowering survivors to make informed choices. “By providing empathy and explaining their options in a non-judgmental manner, these specially trained advocates help to empower survivors,” the NJSP stated in the announcement.
