New Jersey’s Oldest General Store is Up for Sale

It has been in operation since 1876, but now, the Garriss General Store in the Sussex County town of Stillwater is ready for a new chapter. Retired State Police Trooper Dean Voris bought the store in 2016 and said he has listed the property for sale for $699,000.

The sale includes the two-story historic country store and adjacent three-bedroom home.

According to the Star-Ledger, it is believed to be the oldest operating general store in the state of New Jersey.

Voris said he intends to sell the building but is hoping the new owner keeps the business running for generations to come. Now 61, Voris, who said he initially bought the property as an investment, never thought he’d be running the business too and is looking to move on.

After buying the store in 2016, Voris spent nearly four years restoring the building, and reopening the general store in 2020, just a few months before the global pandemic hit. Voris restored the building’s facade and to match the original 1800s design and lettering.
