New Jersey Bird Sanctuary Stops Taking New Arrivals as Avian Flu Spreads

Due to the ongoing risk of avian influenza (bird flu), Associated Humane Societies & Popcorn Park will no longer be accepting sick or injured wild birds. This decision has been made to protect the health of the animals in the shelter, including those in the wildlife refuge, as well as the cats and dogs awaiting adoption.

What You Need to Know About Avian Influenza (H5N1)

Avian influenza is a highly contagious virus that affects both wild and domestic birds, as well as some mammal species. The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) is closely monitoring cases of the virus, and the public is urged to report any sick or dead birds to the appropriate authorities.

What to Do If You Find a Sick or Injured Wild Bird

Since AHS can no longer accept these birds, please reach out to a licensed bird or wildlife rehabilitator:

๐Ÿ“ Ocean County:
Donald Bonica, Toms River Avian Care
๐Ÿ“ Toms River, NJ 08753
๐Ÿ“ž 732-255-9270

๐Ÿ“ Burlington County:
Woodford Cedar Run Wildlife Refuge
๐Ÿ“ Medford, NJ 08055
๐Ÿ“ž 856-983-3329

๐Ÿ“ Statewide Assistance:
For sick birds found anywhere in New Jersey, contact the NJDEP Hotline at (877) 927-6337 for guidance.

For more details on avian influenza and wildlife health, visit NJDEPโ€™s official website.

We understand that this change may be disappointing for those who want to help injured birds, but your cooperation is vital to protecting all the animals in our care. Thank you for your support and understanding!
