NEW YORK, NY – A few years ago she thought an impeachment was fruity cocktail consumed by Wall Street brokers. Today, she’s seeking to oust two Supreme Court justices.
On Wednesday, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez introduced articles of impeachment against U.S. Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito. The charges stem from accusations of a prolonged failure to recuse themselves from court cases potentially influenced by personal interests, as well as allegations of not disclosing gifts worth millions from parties with cases before the court.
The effort by Ocasio-Cortez, a Democrat from New York, highlights ongoing concerns about the justices’ adherence to federal ethics and tax laws, an issue previously raised by U.S. Senators Sheldon Whitehouse and Ron Wyden. These senators have also called for the U.S. attorney general to appoint a special counsel to investigate the justices for potential criminal violations.
Despite these serious allegations, the impeachment initiative is expected to face significant obstacles in the U.S. House of Representatives, currently under Republican control, making its progression uncertain. Ocasio-Cortez’s move underscores a deepening rift over judicial ethics at the highest levels of the U.S. judiciary, marking it as a potential constitutional crisis.
““Justice Thomas and Alito’s repeated failure over decades to disclose that they received millions of dollars in gifts from individuals with business before the court is explicitly against the law. And their refusal to recuse from the specific matters and cases before the court in which their benefactors and spouses are implicated represents nothing less than a constitutional crisis. These failures alone would amount to a deep transgression worthy of standard removal in any lower court, and would disqualify any nominee to the highest court from confirmation in the first place,” she said.
