ALBANY, NY – A 20-year-old man from Crown Point pleaded guilty Thursday to making threats against the President of the United States after admitting he posted a violent message online directed at Joe Biden in 2024.
Federal prosecutors said Troy Kelly acknowledged posting on social media that he would “put a bullet” in then-President Biden’s head, intending his words to be understood as a threat. Kelly was indicted on three counts but pleaded guilty to one charge of making threats against the president.
He now faces up to five years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, and a possible three years of supervised release when sentenced on December 22. As a convicted felon, Kelly will also be barred from possessing firearms.
Acting U.S. Attorney John A. Sarcone III said the case highlights the seriousness of threats against elected officials, regardless of party affiliation. “Threatening to kill the President — any President: Republican, Democrat, or otherwise — is not First Amendment protected speech, it is illegal,” Sarcone said, thanking the Secret Service, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), and New York State Police for their work.
Secret Service and HSI officials also emphasized their commitment to investigating and prosecuting all threats against protected individuals.
