Trenton, NJ — A New Jersey Senate committee has advanced legislation sponsored by Sen. Vin Gopal that would formally designate June as “LGBTQIA+ Pride Month” in New Jersey, framing the move as a response to recent federal actions targeting diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
The Senate State Government, Wagering, Tourism & Historic Preservation Committee voted Thursday to release Senate Bill 2953, which would establish an annual statewide recognition of LGBTQIA+ Pride Month.
The Monmouth County Democrat’s proposal comes amid national political battles over DEI programs, transgender rights, and federal recognition of identity-based observances.
Bill Tied to Federal Rollbacks on Diversity Programs
According to the committee statement accompanying the legislation, lawmakers cited a series of federal executive orders signed since January 2025 that sought to eliminate diversity, equity, and inclusion programs within the federal government.
The statement points to actions by multiple federal agencies, including the Defense Intelligence Agency pausing observances tied to Pride Month, Black History Month, Women’s History Month, Holocaust Remembrance Day, Juneteenth, and other cultural recognition events.
Lawmakers also referenced the removal of gender identity terminology from federal forms and websites, along with reported changes involving transgender-related health resources and content tied to the Stonewall National Monument.
The committee statement argues New Jersey should continue promoting “the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion” by officially recognizing LGBTQIA+ Pride Month statewide.

Bill Continues Through Legislative Process
The measure was prefiled for the 2026-2027 legislative session and received technical revisions before committee approval Thursday.
The legislation must still pass both chambers of the New Jersey Legislature before reaching the governor’s desk.
Gopal has not publicly announced a projected timeline for additional votes on the proposal.
