NJ Transit Free Service Begins Today…Maybe. If The Trains Are Actually Working

TRENTON, NJ — Governor Phil Murphy has declared a fare holiday for NJ TRANSIT riders from August 26 through September 2, 2024, across all transportation modes. This initiative serves as a gesture of appreciation to the hundreds of thousands of customers who rely on public transit daily.

This comes after commuters have been plagued with a summer of problems including canceled schedules, broken down trains, and delays.

During this fare-free week, all rides on the NJ TRANSIT network will be complimentary. For monthly pass holders who have already purchased passes for August, a 25% discount on their September monthly pass will be automatically applied when purchased via the mobile app, at Ticket Vending Machines, or ticket windows.

The decision comes after a series of service disruptions, particularly on the Northeast Corridor, managed in partnership with Amtrak. Governor Murphy expressed his understanding of the difficulties faced by commuters this summer and hopes the fare holiday will provide some relief. “Understanding that our commuters have faced many disruptions this summer, we are providing a one-week fare holiday for NJ TRANSIT riders,” Murphy stated.

NJ TRANSIT and Amtrak have taken several short-term measures to improve service, including increased equipment inspections and infrastructure repairs. These efforts have already resulted in a decrease in incidents. Additional long-term improvements are underway, focusing on the state-of-good-repair of critical infrastructure and pursuing grants to accelerate essential replacements and upgrades.

Moreover, NJ TRANSIT is addressing performance issues with the River LINE light rail service. A supplemental bus plan has been introduced to improve reliability and predictability on weekdays while expedited repairs are made to restore the light rail service.
