NJ TRANSIT Service Still Disrupted After Severe Storms Damage Rail Infrastructure

Several rail lines remain suspended Saturday as crews continue repairing storm damage across New Jersey following Friday night's severe thunderstorms.

Newark, NJ – NJ TRANSIT continues to repair storm-damaged rail infrastructure Saturday, leaving service suspended on several major commuter rail lines following powerful thunderstorms that swept across New Jersey Friday night.

The agency said the Morris & Essex Line, Gladstone Branch, Montclair-Boonton Line, and North Jersey Coast Line remain suspended while crews work to restore damaged infrastructure.

All other rail lines have resumed service, although NJ TRANSIT warned customers to expect some residual delays throughout the system.

Cross-honoring remains in effect

To accommodate affected riders, NJ TRANSIT said rail tickets and passes are being accepted on NJ TRANSIT buses, private carrier buses, and PATH service at Newark Penn Station, Hoboken Terminal, and 33rd Street in New York.

Customers are encouraged to visit njtransit.com/ABC for available alternate travel options while repairs continue.

Earlier Saturday morning, service on the Raritan Valley Line resumed after crews completed repairs from the overnight storms.

Northeast Corridor recovers from separate disruption

Meanwhile, the Northeast Corridor Line has returned to operating on or close to schedule after an earlier disabled train near Metuchen caused delays of up to 30 minutes in both directions.

NJ TRANSIT said eastbound track-level boarding at New Brunswick, Edison, and Metuchen has also returned to normal.

Friday night’s storms brought damaging winds, heavy rain, widespread power outages, downed trees, and damage to transportation infrastructure across much of New Jersey. Utility crews and emergency responders continue cleanup efforts throughout the state as temperatures are expected to climb into the upper 90s with heat index values exceeding 100 degrees on the Fourth of July.

Key Points

  • NJ TRANSIT service remains suspended on the Morris & Essex, Gladstone Branch, Montclair-Boonton, and North Jersey Coast lines because of storm damage.
  • Rail tickets and passes are being cross-honored on buses and PATH service while repairs continue.
  • Other rail lines have resumed service, though riders should expect residual delays throughout the system.
