KEANSBURG, NJ — The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office has released details regarding a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred on May 27, 2024, in Keansburg, Monmouth County. The deceased, identified as 46-year-old Willem Roman of Keansburg, succumbed to injuries from the incident.

The Keansburg Police Department responded to a welfare check at a residence on Seabreeze Way around 1:07 PM. Upon entering, officers encountered Roman who was armed with numerous weapons and a running chainsaw.

As Roman advanced towards the officers with the chainsaw, Patrolman John Swartz deployed a taser, and Patrolman Tyler Manges discharged his firearm, striking Roman.

Emergency medical teams provided immediate aid to Roman, who was then transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune. Initially listed in critical but stable condition, Roman was pronounced dead on June 14, 2024.

The incident remains under investigation, with no additional details currently available. Under New Jersey law, such cases involving a fatality connected to law enforcement actions are required to be reviewed by a grand jury to determine if charges against the involved officers are warranted.
