BROOKLYN, NY – A New York City police officer was shot in the face Monday morning during a confrontation with a homicide suspect in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn.
The officer’s injuries are not considered life-threatening, and he is expected to make a full recovery, according to police.
The incident began when officers responded to a fatal shooting around 6 a.m. near Linden Boulevard and Thomas Boyland Street.
Suspect returns to crime scene and opens fire
Police said the suspect, believed to be involved in the earlier killing of a 41-year-old man, returned to the scene around 7:45 a.m. and opened fire with a shotgun. It remains unclear whether the officer was struck by a direct blast or debris, but he sustained facial injuries.
The wounded officer was rushed to Brookdale University Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition. Two additional officers responding to the incident were hurt in a separate vehicle crash but are expected to recover.
Suspect later found dead after barricading himself
Authorities said the gunman fled into a nearby apartment following the shooting and barricaded himself inside. When officers entered, they found the suspect dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Mayor Eric Adams said he had been briefed on the situation and was monitoring it closely, while Assemblymember Zohran Kwame Mamdani, mayor-elect expressed support for the wounded officer and praised police for their rapid response.
Police advise public to avoid area during investigation
The NYPD urged residents to steer clear of Linden Boulevard and Thomas Boyland Street as the investigation continues. A heavy police presence remained at the scene into the afternoon.
Officials said more information would be released through NYPD News and official police social media channels as the case develops.
