Ocean City Beaches Reopen After Medical Waste Cleanup

September 20, 2024

Ocean City, MD – The Ocean City Emergency Services has affirmed that the ocean is now safe for swimming and surfing following thorough clean-up operations.

Officials from Ocean City Emergency Services, in collaboration with Worcester County Health Department and Environmental Programs, have conducted extensive water testing. Results indicate that water quality levels have returned to normal after several days of beach sweeping and multiple high tides.

Despite the source of the waste remaining unidentified, Ocean City Emergency Services will continue working with agencies from Maryland, Delaware, and Virginia to investigate the matter. Ocean City Emergency Services Director Joe Theobald assured the public that safety measures are in place as the ocean reopens.

Theobald emphasizes that swimmers should only enter the water when lifeguards are on duty. He also thanked the community for their cooperation and understanding during the clean-up effort.

Additionally, the Ocean City Police Department encourages residents and visitors to check out a related video posted on their Facebook page for more information. For the next few days, extra caution is advised for beachgoers, especially swimming in guarded areas when lifeguards are present.
