Ocean County Surpasses 5,000 COVID-19 Cases; Toms River Nearing 1,000

TOMS RIVER-According to today’s figures released by the Ocean County Health Department, the number of COVID-19 cases in Ocean County has passed 5,000, far below an early March doom and gloom prediction of 100,000 by May forecasted by the Toms River Patch initially.  There are now 5,171 cases.

According to both Governor Phil Murphy and President Donald Trump, the curve is being flattened, but infections are still growing, but not at the rate of just one week ago.

Lakewood still leads the county with 1,403, but the infection rate per thousand is creeping upwards in nearby Toms River.  Toms River now accounts for 17.4% of all COVID-19 cases while Lakewood Township accounts for 27.1% of all confirmed cases, according to OCHD figures released today.   Brick Township is host to 13.7% of cases and Jackson Township has just 8.7% of all cases countywide.

Two small shore towns, Harvey Cedars and Mantoloking have yet to have a positive case reported.

According to New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, new hospitalizations have decreased in the past 24 hours.

As of today, the Governor released the following hospitalization statistics.

“Sadly, we’ve lost an additional 314 New Jerseyans. We’ve now lost a total of 5,063 New Jerseyans to this virus,” Murphy said today.  “We continue to see the curve of new cases remains significantly flat. This a positive step in our fight – but we’re not close to even considering claiming victory.”
