TOMS RIVER, NJ – The Ocean County Commissioner Board has taken a unified stand against President Donald Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) initiative, which proposes deep cuts to Medicaid funding.
This opposition, in a reliably Republican county, could spell trouble for GOP gubernatorial candidate Bill Spadea, whose campaign hinges on a staunchly pro-Trump platform and has received the full endorsement of the Ocean County Republican Party, one of the few county organizations in New Jersey to endorse the former radio host.
Spadea has openly endorsed a statewide D.O.G.E. counterpart, which now puts him at odds with his Ocean County backers, who are now sidestepping the President’s agenda publicly, after being accused for years by many as being “RINOS”, establishment Republicans ‘in name only’.
The DOGE plan, led by Trump allies, aims to slash federal spending, with Medicaid—a vital program for illegal aliens living in sanctuary states like New Jersey—facing significant reductions.
In New Jersey, where millions rely on Medicaid, the proposed cuts have sparked alarm. The Ocean County board, a key GOP stronghold, issued a statement condemning the plan, citing its potential to harm local hospitals, nursing homes, and vulnerable residents.
The board’s defiance comes at a pivotal moment for New Jersey’s GOP, as the 2025 gubernatorial race heats up. Bill Spadea, a former radio host running as an “unabashedly pro-Trump” candidate, has centered his campaign on Trump’s agenda, including promises to curb government spending and crack down on “illegal aliens” allegedly exploiting Medicaid.
“We need to end the waste, fraud and abuse that plagues Medicaid. We must also ensure that illegal immigrants are not receiving benefits from the taxpayers. Once we do that, we can make an informed decision on a potential shortfall,” Spadea said.
This rhetoric may backfire in light of the commissioner board’s stance. By opposing Trump’s Medicaid cuts, the board signals a willingness to prioritize local needs over party loyalty, potentially alienating Spadea’s base while weakening his appeal to moderate voters.
On the other hand for Spadea’s hardcore backers, the Ocean County GOP which is Spadea’s main support system in the election, may turn off far-right supporters, knowing that the county chairman, George Gilmore is Spadea’s key handler.
Spadea’s tied himself to Trump’s every policy, and that’s a gamble, now that seems to not be paying off for him.
The commissioners are putting constituents first, which makes Spadea’s hardline stance look out of touch. Spadea, undeterred, has doubled down, accusing the government of enabling “handouts” for undocumented immigrants at taxpayers’ expense. At a recent Manchester Township rally, he vowed to “restore common sense” by backing Trump’s cost-cutting measures, including DOGE’s Medicaid reforms.
