One Dead in Brielle Crash

FREEHOLDAn unidentified male died as a result of being struck by a motor vehicle on Tuesday morning in Brielle, announced Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher J. Gramiccioni.

The male victim was walking in the area of State Highway 71 and Bradley Avenue in Brielle at approximately 12:37 a.m. Tuesday morning, when he was struck in the northbound lane by a 2018 Nissan Versa driven by Dr. James S. McCaughan, 57, of Belmar.

The victim was pronounced deceased at 12:56 am.

McCaughan was charged with third degree Causing Death While Driving with a Revoked or Suspended License, as well as two additional motor vehicle tickets. He was released pending trial.

The crash remains under investigation by the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office, Monmouth County Serious Collision Analysis Response Team (SCART), and Brielle Police Department.

Despite these charges, every defendant is presumed innocent, unless and until found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, following a trial at which the defendant has all of the trial rights guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution and State law.
