One Dead in Cecil County House Fire

CECIL COUNTY, MD — A fire in Rising Sun claimed the life of a local man early Friday morning, with ongoing investigations by the Office of the State Fire Marshal and the Maryland State Police Criminal Enforcement Division. The incident occurred at approximately 4:20 AM at a residence located at 119 Cooper Street.

Firefighting teams from the Community Fire Company of Rising Sun, Inc., along with other local departments, responded to the blaze. Upon arrival, they encountered significant fire and smoke emanating from the eaves of the one-story home. A victim, later identified as Jeffrey Scot Jackson, 55, was found deceased near the rear door. Jackson was reportedly the house’s sole occupant and owner.

The origin of the fire has been traced to the attic, although the exact cause is still being determined.

Investigators did not find any smoke alarms in the home, which could have alerted Jackson to the danger sooner. It appears Jackson may have attempted to extinguish the fire himself after discovering it.

Jackson’s body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an official cause of death determination. Chief Deputy and Acting State Fire Marshal Jason M. Mowbray emphasized the critical importance of smoke alarms and having an escape plan as key safety measures that can significantly affect outcomes in such emergencies.
