Operation Clear Track brings rail safety blitz to Newark

Newark police to join nationwide Operation Clear Track railroad safety blitz

Newark, DE – Newark Police will be out in force next Tuesday as part of “Operation Clear Track,” a national railroad safety initiative aimed at preventing injuries and fatalities at rail crossings, officials announced Tuesday afternoon.

The campaign, held during See Tracks? Think Train Week (September 15–21), will see Newark officers partnering with Amtrak Police and more than 600 law enforcement agencies across 48 states. The coordinated enforcement effort is the largest of its kind in the United States.

On Tuesday, September 16, officers will be stationed at key railroad grade crossings in Newark, including North College Avenue, New London Road, and West Main Street. There, they will hand out railroad safety cards to pedestrians and drivers, issue warnings, and cite those who disregard railroad crossing laws. A rain date is scheduled for Wednesday, September 17.

Federal data shows that a person or vehicle is struck by a train every three hours in the U.S. Operation Clear Track is organized by Operation Lifesaver Inc., Amtrak Police, and law enforcement agencies nationwide to raise awareness about the dangers of crossing or walking on train tracks illegally.

The effort is part of a broader educational campaign spanning the U.S., Canada, and Mexico to combat risky behaviors near railroad tracks through outreach, signage, and high-visibility enforcement.
