NEWARK, NJ—Jessie Mayfield, a 61-year-old resident of Paterson, New Jersey, has been sentenced to 125 months in prison after pleading guilty to charges related to drug trafficking and firearm possession. U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger announced the sentence, which was handed down by U.S. District Judge Evelyn Padin in Newark federal court.
Mayfield admitted to possessing fentanyl intended for distribution and a firearm in furtherance of his drug trafficking activities. The charges against him included being a previously convicted felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, possession with intent to distribute controlled substances, and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.
The court documents reveal that on August 24, 2021, Mayfield was found with a significant quantity of fentanyl packaged for sale. He also possessed a Ruger .22 caliber pistol and 95 .22 caliber long rifle cartridges at the time of his arrest.
Following his prison term, Mayfield will be under supervised release for three years, as part of his sentence. This case underscores the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to tackle the intertwined issues of illegal drug distribution and firearm-related crimes.
