Utica, NY – A patient undergoing a mental health evaluation at Wynn Hospital violently attacked two nurses and a visitor last week, leaving several people injured before staff were able to restrain him.
The incident occurred on October 16 when Utica Police were called to the hospital after reports of an assault involving multiple victims.
Authorities said the man attempted to flee during his evaluation and became combative when staff intervened to stop him.

Hospital staff injured trying to restrain violent patient
According to Utica Police, the patient began punching and kicking the two nurses who tried to contain him after he attempted to leave the treatment area. A visitor who was not involved in the situation was also attacked without provocation.
Additional hospital staff rushed to help and managed to subdue the man after a struggle. Several responders sustained injuries during the altercation, including sprains and deep bruises to their legs, hands, and feet, as well as a concussion.
Charges pending after psychiatric evaluation
Police said the patient was transferred to the hospital’s psychiatric unit following the attack. Once he is discharged, he will be formally charged with three counts of second-degree assault and one count of third-degree assault.
Utica Police said the investigation remains active and praised hospital staff for their quick actions in preventing further harm during the violent outburst.
