WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. – A pedestrian suffered life-threatening injuries early Sunday morning after being struck by a vehicle that fled the scene along State Highway 42, police said.
The crash occurred around 4:34 a.m. on February 15 in the area of Whitman Drive. According to investigators, a 2021 Mercedes-Benz G-Class SUV was traveling southbound on the Black Horse Pike when its passenger side struck a pedestrian walking along the shoulder of the roadway.
Instead of stopping, the driver continued southbound, leaving the victim severely injured. Officers and emergency crews arrived moments later and found the pedestrian unconscious on the roadside. The victim was rushed to Jefferson Hospital in Washington Township, then airlifted to Cooper University Hospital’s Trauma Center in Camden for advanced treatment.
Police trace suspect vehicle through license plate cameras
Using automated license plate reader (LPR) technology, investigators were able to identify the Mercedes and determine who was behind the wheel. Authorities have not yet released the driver’s name or said whether charges have been filed as the investigation continues.
The crash forced the temporary closure of State Highway 42 between Greentree Road and Whitman Drive for approximately two hours while officers documented the scene and collected evidence.
