NEWARK, NJ—In a major step toward sustainable public transit, NJ TRANSIT has been granted $99.5 million by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) to upgrade the Meadowlands Bus Garage in Secaucus. Announced on July 10, this funding is part of New Jersey’s ambitious initiative to transition to a zero-emission bus fleet across the state.
The Meadowlands Bus Garage, operational since 1993 and originally designed for diesel buses, will undergo significant renovations to support up to 67 electric buses initially, with plans to expand capacity to 130 buses. The project involves constructing an outdoor charging station equipped with a canopy and pantographs to supply electricity to the buses.
Governor Phil Murphy emphasized the importance of modernizing New Jersey’s transit infrastructure to meet the state’s dense population demands and environmental goals. He highlighted that the project aligns with New Jersey’s commitment to environmental justice and equity.
NJ TRANSIT’s President & CEO, Kevin S. Corbett, expressed gratitude for the FTA’s support, which will accelerate the Zero Emission Bus Program. The project is part of NJ TRANSIT’s broader 10-year strategic plan to convert its bus fleet to zero emissions and includes workforce development activities and training.
The Meadowlands Garage serves 32 bus routes in Hudson County, logging over 6.4 million miles annually and playing a crucial role in the daily commutes of diverse New Jersey communities. The completion of the outdoor charging facility is projected for 2028, marking a significant advancement in New Jersey’s public transportation network.
