Police Officer Kills Dog During Attack in Philadelphia, Victim in Stable Condition

PHILADELPHIA, PA — A Philadelphia police officer fatally shot a Cane Corso dog to end an attack on a man by the Cane Corso and three pit bulls in Mantua neighborhood. The incident occurred at around 10:16 AM on Wednesday. Officer #1, who was on patrol, was alerted by a civilian about the loose dogs. At the intersection of Fairmount Avenue and Union Street, the officer found a 53-year-old Black man being attacked.

Despite using his siren in an attempt to deter the dogs, their assault continued. The officer then discharged his weapon multiple times, resulting in the death of the Cane Corso and the retreat of the pit bulls. The man incurred multiple bite wounds and was subsequently taken to Presbyterian Hospital by paramedics, where he is now stable. Officer #1 was unharmed.

The police department confirmed that Officer #1’s body camera was not activated during the incident. Following department policy, the officer has been assigned to administrative duty pending investigations by Internal Affairs and the Officer-Involved Shooting division.
