Point Pleasant Beach, NJ – A family celebrating a 5-year-old’s birthday at Joey Tomatoes in Point Pleasant Beach says what began as an expensive Jersey Shore pizza lunch ended in a heated confrontation after they brought out a birthday cake, despite claiming they had called ahead to ask if it was permitted.
The video, which begins in the middle of the dispute, has generated thousands of views and prompted social media users to debate whether the restaurant or the family was in the right.
Because the recording starts after the disagreement had already begun, it does not capture the full interaction that led to the exchange.
Family says they called ahead
According to the Vintage Jersey Facebook page, which shared the video online, the group purchased four large pizzas with assorted toppings and five large drinks for approximately $250 while celebrating a 5-year-old nephew’s birthday. The poster said they called the restaurant before arriving and were told bringing a cake would be acceptable.
After the meal, the family said they asked for a knife to cut the cake and even offered to pay an additional fee. The poster wrote that the owner’s reaction prompted them to begin recording, describing it as “the craziest thing I’ve ever experienced.”
Heated exchange captured on video
In the video, the restaurant owner objects to the family bringing out the cake without what he describes as proper arrangements.
“You didn’t call, you didn’t make arrangements, you just can’t walk into a restaurant, do whatever you want,” the owner says. “It’s inappropriate… We’ve been here since 1990. Nobody’s ever done that. It’s inappropriate. It’s a restaurant.”
A member of the family responds, “It’s a 5-year-old birthday party. It’s a 5-year-old birthday party. We just want to cut the cake.”

The owner continues, “How about if I just come to your house with a cake and do whatever I want?… These customers have been here for 20 years. No one embarrassed in anything. You’re embarrassed.”
The customer replies, “You should be apologizing to us.”
Online reaction split
The video quickly drew a wide range of reactions, with commenters expressing support for both the family and the restaurant.
Some criticized the owner’s handling of the situation, with one commenter writing, “Sorry ma’am you just lost a lot of customers,” while another added, “Imagine being this mad over a cake?”
Others noted that many restaurants charge a cake-cutting fee and questioned whether viewers had enough context to judge the encounter. “There is a rule that if you bring a cake to the restaurant you have them cut it and serve it for a fee. This isn’t out of the ordinary,” one commenter wrote.
Another cautioned against drawing conclusions from the footage alone, commenting, “If there is the one thing the internet has taught me is to never trust a video that was started halfway into an argument.”
Joey Tomatoes has not commented on the incident.
