Police Release Details on Officer-Involved Shooting of 13-Year-Old Boy

Utica, NY — The deceased juvenile in last night’s incident has been identified as Nyah Mway, age 13, of Utica. The Utica Police Department extends heartfelt condolences to Mway’s family and promises continued transparency throughout the investigation.

The three officers involved in the incident, all members of the Crime Prevention Unit, have been identified. Officer Patrick Husnay, a six-year veteran of the Utica Police Department, fired the duty weapon that struck Mway. He was accompanied by Officer Bryce Patterson, a four-year veteran, and Officer Andrew Citriniti, a two-and-a-half-year veteran who previously served with the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office.

On June 28, the officers were patrolling West Utica near Shaw Street to assist the Criminal Investigations Division with recent robbery investigations. The suspects in these robberies were described as Asian males, one dark-skinned male, with one incident involving a black firearm. Nyah Mway and another juvenile matched these descriptions and were found in the vicinity of a recent robbery. Mway was also walking in the roadway, violating New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law 1156a. Following CID’s directives, the officers attempted to stop and identify the two juveniles.

Body worn camera (BWC) footage reveals that when officers approached Mway, he fled on foot, producing a replica GLOCK pellet gun. The footage shows Mway pointing the weapon at Officer Patterson and the other officers at the 51 and 53-second marks.

The NYS Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigations will determine if the shooting violated any state laws. The Utica Police Department aims to maintain transparency by sharing all available evidence, including BWC footage, through a publicly accessible Google Drive link. This folder includes the handgun used and other relevant files.

There are two ongoing investigations: one by the NYS Attorney General and the other an internal investigation by the Utica Police Department’s Professional Standards unit. The department hopes these investigations will provide thorough and fair answers to the public’s questions.
