FREEHOLD, NJ — Two separate traffic incidents in Howell and West Long Branch on Saturday evening claimed the lives of a pedestrian and a bicyclist, Monmouth County Prosecutor Raymond S. Santiago announced Sunday.
The first incident occurred just before 7:45 p.m. on November 30 in Howell Township. Police responded to the area of U.S. Route 9 and Strickland Road, where a 71-year-old pedestrian from Howell was struck by a 2016 Honda CR-V driven by a 58-year-old Howell resident. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, and the driver remained on-site to cooperate with authorities.
About an hour later, at approximately 9 p.m., police in West Long Branch were dispatched to the intersection of State Route 36 and Monmouth Road following a report of a bicyclist being struck. The victim, a 55-year-old Long Branch resident, was transported to Monmouth Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The driver, an 18-year-old Tinton Falls resident operating a 2018 Range Rover, also remained at the scene.
Both incidents are under active investigation, and authorities have not yet announced whether any charges will be filed.
