PORTLAND, Ore. — A man driving a stolen Jeep eluded police before crashing into a Portland Streetcar stop in the Pearl District on Saturday morning, narrowly missing pedestrians.

Portland police said an officer spotted the occupied stolen 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee around 9:49 a.m. near Northwest 14th Avenue and Northwest Johnson Street. As the officer requested backup, the driver sped away, running against one-way traffic on 10th Avenue before losing control and crashing into the streetcar stop at Northwest 10th Avenue and Northwest Glisan Street.

At least three people were near the stop when the crash occurred but managed to move out of the way. No injuries were reported.

The driver, identified as 29-year-old Edgar Castro, attempted to flee on foot but was quickly apprehended. He was taken to a hospital for treatment before being booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center.

Authorities say the incident remains under investigation as they review potential charges against Castro.
