TOMS RIVER, N.J. — Rep. Mikie Sherrill met with Orthodox Jewish leaders and business owners in Toms River on Tuesday to discuss issues affecting the local Jewish community. The meeting included representatives from both Toms River and Lakewood, two areas with significant Orthodox Jewish populations.
Sherrill, who is running for governor, is in town to rally Orthodox Jewish support for her campaign, the first Democrat candidate to meet with local leaders.
The congresswoman’s visit comes as concerns over antisemitism continue to grow nationwide, with protests on college campuses, attacks on Jewish individuals, and divisions within the Democratic Party over U.S. policy on Israel. Sherrill’s outreach to Jewish leaders stands in contrast to some members of her party, who have faced criticism for their stance on the Israel-Hamas conflict.
During the meeting, community leaders highlighted key issues affecting Orthodox Jews in the region, including religious freedom, security concerns, and economic challenges faced by local businesses. The discussion also addressed the impact of rising antisemitism and the need for stronger measures to protect Jewish communities.
Sherrill, a Democrat representing New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District, has been vocal in condemning antisemitism. Her visit to Toms River is seen as an effort to strengthen ties with Jewish leaders at a time when relations between the Democratic Party and Jewish voters have been strained.
