Salisbury man discovers six-figure scratch-off win during routine stop with friends
SALISBURY, MD – A retired construction worker left his two best friends waiting in the car during a routine Wawa stop, walked inside to buy a Maryland Lottery scratch-off and returned with news nobody expected — his ticket had delivered a $200,000 prize.
The Salisbury retiree purchased the winning $5,000,000 LUXE scratch-off at the Wawa located at 668 South Salisbury Boulevard, according to the Maryland Lottery.
His friends remained in the vehicle while he went inside.
The retiree occasionally buys scratch-offs and also enjoys visiting local casinos with his friends to play slots and Keno.
This particular stop produced something much bigger.
After purchasing the $50 ticket, the man scanned it and received a message indicating he had won.
The scanner did not immediately answer his biggest question — how much?
He brought the ticket to a store clerk, who confirmed that it carried a $200,000 prize.
The retiree initially struggled to believe his good fortune, telling lottery officials he considered himself someone with little luck.
He then headed back to the car and broke the news to his two friends.
They were stunned, too.
The celebration continued when both friends accompanied the retiree to Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore on Monday to claim the $200,000 prize.
The longtime construction worker already knows where some of the money will go.
He plans to pay off his vehicle and use the remaining winnings to enjoy his retirement.
The $5,000,000 LUXE game costs $50 per ticket and debuted in February with three $5 million top prizes.
Two of those $5 million prizes remain available, according to the Maryland Lottery.
Seven additional $200,000 prizes also remain unclaimed.
