Road rage shooting suspect arrested after gunfire erupts on I-40

A road-rage shooting investigation led detectives to a suspect now jailed on multiple felony charges

Buncombe County, NC — A man accused of firing multiple shots into another driver’s vehicle along Interstate 40 has been arrested and charged with attempted murder following a week-long investigation, authorities said.

Alexander Sherman McKenzie was taken into custody shortly after 8 p.m. Monday on Tunnel Road, according to the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office.

The arrest stems from a shooting reported just after 6 a.m. on June 10.

Investigators said a man driving on I-40 near Exit 59, Patton Cove Road, reported that another driver fired several shots into his vehicle.

Authorities identified McKenzie as a person wanted for questioning in the case before his arrest.

Following the investigation, Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office detectives charged McKenzie with attempted first-degree murder and several additional offenses.

The charges include assault with a deadly weapon on a government officer, resisting a public officer, possession of a firearm by a felon, discharge of a firearm within an enclosure to incite fear, discharging a weapon into occupied property, injury to personal property, carrying a concealed weapon and expired registration card/tag.

McKenzie is being held at the Buncombe County Detention Facility without bond.

The sheriff’s office said patrol deputies were able to take McKenzie into custody without injuries to officers or members of the public.

Authorities have not released additional details regarding the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The investigation remains ongoing.
