Roadwork on Washington Avenue in Belleville Nears Completion, Resumes After Labor Day

BELLEVILLE, N.J. — The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) is in the final stages of the first phase of the Washington Avenue construction project, according to an update from the Belleville Police Department. The project, which has been underway for several weeks, is set to temporarily conclude as NJDOT crews begin removing concrete barriers from the roadway.

The removal process is expected to be completed by Monday, August 26, when Washington Avenue will fully reopen to traffic. This will mark the end of the current stage of construction, allowing for a brief reprieve in the area’s traffic disruptions.

However, construction is scheduled to resume after Labor Day on or about September 3, weather permitting. The next phase will involve work on Washington Avenue from Rossmore Place to Division Avenue, with each section anticipated to take approximately 15 days to complete.

“The area in front of our middle school will be clear of any construction by the time school starts,” the Belleville Police Department confirmed in a statement, addressing concerns from residents about potential delays in school access.

Officials advise residents and commuters to continue monitoring both the Belleville Police Department’s Facebook page and the township’s website for ongoing updates on the project. The completion of the Washington Avenue project is expected to improve traffic flow and infrastructure in the area.
