A 77-year-old man’s life was cut short crossing Shady Grove Road, as police investigate the fatal collision.

GAITHERSBURG, MD. — A 77-year-old Rockville man died Thursday night after he was struck by a vehicle while crossing Shady Grove Road in Gaithersburg, according to Montgomery County Police.

Paul Jerome Marangos was hit around 9 p.m. while walking from the median at the intersection of northbound Shady Grove Road and Blackwell Road. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Collision Reconstruction Unit leads investigation

Montgomery County Police said their Collision Reconstruction Unit determined that the driver of a 2020 white Genesis G70 was heading north on Shady Grove Road when the crash occurred. The vehicle entered the intersection at Blackwell Road and struck Marangos, who was reportedly crossing from the median.

Emergency personnel from the 1st District and Montgomery County Fire Rescue responded quickly to the scene, providing medical aid before transporting Marangos to the hospital.

The driver involved in the crash remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators, police confirmed.

Public assistance requested in fatal crash probe

Detectives are now seeking help from the public to gather additional information. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has relevant details is encouraged to contact the Montgomery County Police CRU at 240-773-6620.

No charges have been filed as of Tuesday, and investigators have not released further information about the driver or the speed of the vehicle at the time of the incident.
