The former New York Rangers forward suffered serious facial injuries after fainting at home as he continues treatment for Stage 4 colon cancer.

New York, NY – Former NHL forward Ron Duguay was hospitalized after fainting and collapsing at his home, an incident tied to complications from his ongoing battle with Stage 4 colon cancer.

Duguay, 68, lost consciousness during the fall, suffering significant facial injuries, including several knocked-out teeth. He was transported by ambulance to a hospital, where doctors conducted additional testing and identified further internal complications related to his weakened condition.

His daughter, Shay Thomas wrote:

Our dad @ronduguay10 continues to show us just how strong he is. On Friday, he fainted at home, was unconscious, injured a few parts of his face, and knocked out a few teeth in the fall…this time, it wasn’t from hockey. He was taken by ambulance to the hospital.

After extensive testing, doctors found that he was extremely dehydrated and had been struggling to eat because of how sick he had been feeling. They also discovered varices, portal hypertensive gastropathy, internal bleeding, and an ulcer.

Because of the cancer in his liver, along with everything his liver has endured from surgery, chemotherapy, and the pump, pressure has built up inside the liver. That pressure can back up into the stomach and cause bleeding. The ulcer still needs further evaluation, but the bleeding and liver pressure are the major concerns right now.

He is still admitted to the hospital and receiving blood transfusions while the doctors continue to monitor him closely.

Through it all, our dad remains strong, positive, and trusting God every step of the way. We will continue to keep everyone updated. Please keep him covered in prayer.

Cancer diagnosis led to multiple surgeries

Duguay publicly revealed that he was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer more than a year ago. Since then, he has undergone multiple major surgeries, including the removal of his appendix and gallbladder as part of his treatment.

His daughters launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover mounting medical expenses and travel costs associated with his care. The fundraiser has since exceeded its original goal as supporters from across the hockey community and beyond contributed.

Sarah Palin has remained by his side

Duguay has been in a relationship with former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin since 2022. Throughout his cancer treatment, Palin has frequently traveled to be with him and provide support during his recovery.

The couple has spoken publicly about the challenges of navigating serious illness while maintaining their relationship, with Palin accompanying Duguay during portions of his treatment.

What happens next

Duguay remains under medical care as physicians continue evaluating the complications discovered following his collapse. No updated timeline for his recovery or ongoing treatment has been announced.

Duguay was a fan favorite during his NHL career, most notably with the New York Rangers, and has remained a recognizable figure through his work as a hockey analyst. His hospitalization underscores the serious health challenges faced by patients battling advanced-stage cancer and has prompted an outpouring of support from fans and the hockey community.
