The Schenectady Police Department, in collaboration with the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society (MHHS), is launching a series of free pet food pantry pop-up events for city residents in need, beginning next week.
The initiative, part of the Pets Are Family Too Assistance Program, is funded by a $20,000 grant awarded to the city in 2023 through the Better Cities for Pets™ program. The program was developed by Lieutenant Michael Dalton and Animal Control Officer Elizabeth Booke and reflects the city’s commitment to supporting pet-owning residents facing economic challenges.
The first pet food distribution event will take place on Tuesday, May 6, from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. at Central Park Dog Park, 500 Iroquois Way. The event is open to all City of Schenectady residents and will be staffed by MHHS, which is providing the food and additional support.
“This is about keeping families together — and for many, pets are family,” said Schenectady Mayor Gary McCarthy. “We’re proud to launch a program that reflects that belief and helps our residents through tough times.”
City plans to expand outreach through future events
The Animal Control Unit of the Police Department will continue to host additional pop-up events at various locations throughout the city. Dates and venues for future distributions will be announced by the department in the coming weeks.
Schenectady is recognized as a certified Better City for Pets, a designation that highlights efforts to support pet-friendly infrastructure and services across homes, parks, businesses, and shelters.
