Senator O’Scanlon Introduces Bill S1683 to Allow Armed Officers in New Jersey Schools

TRENTON, NJ – Senator Declan J. O’Scanlon, Jr. of District 13 (Monmouth) has pre-filed Bill S1683 for introduction in the 2024 legislative session, aimed at enhancing security in public schools.

The bill proposes that school districts may not prohibit active or retired law enforcement officers, including safe schools resource officers or Class Three special law enforcement officers, or registered security officers from carrying firearms in school buildings or on school grounds if authorized under State law.

The legislation is a response to communities seeking increased security measures in the wake of recent school shootings. It aims to address concerns where some boards of education have restricted armed officers from carrying firearms while performing school security duties.

The bill seeks to ensure that communities have the option to employ armed officers for enhanced protection in schools.
