Scooter robbery outside Newark Nike store leaves man beaten and $500 stolen

NEWARK, N.J. — Newark police are asking for the public’s help in identifying two suspects who assaulted and robbed a man of his electric scooter and $500 in broad daylight outside a retail store Saturday.

Officers responded to the robbery around 3:20 p.m. on the 600 block of Mayor Kenneth A. Gibson Boulevard, in front of the Nike Factory Store. According to authorities, the victim told officers he had secured his scooter to a city pole before entering the store.

Upon exiting the store, the victim saw two Black males attempting to take his scooter. When he confronted them, the suspects allegedly punched him in the face, took his fanny pack containing $500 and personal belongings, and fled the scene.

“They took his fanny pack containing $500, his personal belongings, and fled north on scooters on Kenneth A. Gibson Boulevard, then west on Central Avenue and south on Halsey Street,” officials stated.

The victim’s scooter was later returned by an unrelated witness who had seen the robbery and told police that two males had given the scooter to him during the incident.

Police seek public assistance as investigation continues

Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda, Sr., released a request for help from the public to identify the suspects captured in surveillance images from the scene.

The case remains under active investigation. No arrests have been made as of Wednesday.

Authorities have not released additional details about the suspects beyond the victim’s initial description.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Newark police or submit tips anonymously through available reporting channels.
