Scratch-off turns into $100K surprise for Virginia man

Dumfries player hits top prize on final winning ticket in discontinued lottery game as scratcher run officially closes

WOODBRIDGE, VA — A routine stop at a Woodbridge convenience store turned into a five-figure shock for a Dumfries man who scratched off a lottery ticket and realized he had just landed the final top prize in a Virginia scratch-off game that has now officially ended.

Winston Mighty purchased a Pink Panther Diamond Tripler ticket from Fresh World at 2042 Daniel Stuart Square in Woodbridge, according to the Virginia Lottery. Moments later, he scratched the ticket and discovered he had won the game’s top prize of $100,000.

“I play every day but don’t win often,” Mighty told Virginia Lottery officials after realizing the win, describing his reaction as stunned.

Lottery officials confirmed the prize is the third and final top prize claimed in the Pink Panther Diamond Tripler game, ticket number 2363, meaning the scratcher game has now been closed.

Virginia Lottery policy requires scratch-off games to be discontinued once all top prizes have been claimed, marking the official end of the game’s prize distribution cycle.

Mighty, who lives in Dumfries in Prince William County, said he plans to use part of the winnings to treat his family to meals and also travel to visit relatives in Jamaica.

The odds of winning the $100,000 top prize in the game were 1 in 1,101,600, according to lottery officials. The overall odds of winning any prize in the game were listed at 1 in 4.19.

The Virginia Lottery also highlighted the broader impact of its revenue, noting that all profits go toward K–12 education in the state.

Prince William County, where Mighty resides, received more than $63.3 million in lottery funds for K–12 education in the last fiscal year. Across Virginia, the lottery contributed more than $901 million to public education in Fiscal Year 2025, representing roughly 10% of the state’s total K–12 education budget.

Officials encourage responsible play and note that assistance for problem gambling is available 24/7 through the Virginia Problem Gambling Helpline at 888-532-3500, which offers call, text, and chat support.

More information, including educational funding breakdowns and game details, is available on the Virginia Lottery website and official social media channels, including Facebook, X, Instagram, and YouTube.
