Amid concerns over homelessness, petty crime, and drug use in the Rio Grande area, Middle Township officials have announced plans to prioritize public safety while continuing to provide social services.
Mayor Tim Donohue emphasized the need for law and order, citing state-level decisions affecting law enforcement’s capabilities. Donohue reiterated the township’s commitment to aiding those in need while placing public safety as the top priority.
Issues such as illegal drug use and violent crime have been observed in homeless encampments on private properties. Officials pledged to use all legal means to safeguard residents’ health and well-being.
Chief Jennifer Pooler of the Middle Township Police Department echoed the Mayor’s stance, affirming the department’s dedication to offering compassionate services while maintaining zero tolerance for criminal behavior linked to homelessness.
Donohue emphasized Middle Township’s commitment to addressing homelessness while underscoring the need for broader solutions supported by substantial funding from county and legislative bodies.
The township called upon the Cape May County Board of Commissioners and the First Legislative District to invest in practical measures to combat the root causes of homelessness, emphasizing the issue as a national concern requiring concerted efforts.
