Surveillance catches suspect in Newark grab and go coin heist

Police seek help identifying suspect accused of taking $500 in coins from Newark restaurant

NEWARK, NJ — A box packed with $500 in quarters vanished from a fast-food counter in minutes, and Newark officials are asking the public to help identify the man caught on surveillance video walking off with the coins in the middle of the day.

Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda Sr. said the theft happened Sunday, January 11, at Royal Chicken & Biscuit in the 100 block of Market Street. An employee left the box of quarters unattended on a counter, and at about 1:50 p.m., a male suspect was recorded taking the box and leaving the restaurant, officials said.

The Newark Police Division is seeking information that could lead to the suspect’s identification. Miranda asked anyone who recognizes the man shown in the released image to contact the department’s 24-hour Crime Stopper tip line.
