September 13, 2025

Dover, DE – A teenager was killed and another seriously injured Friday afternoon after their electric bicycle struck a school bus in Dover, shutting down part of West Lebanon Road for hours.

The crash happened around 4 p.m. as a Caesar Rodney School District bus was turning right onto Royal Grant Way, investigators said. At the same time, an e-bike carrying two riders was traveling eastbound on the sidewalk next to the bus.

The sidewalk has a posted stop sign requiring cyclists to halt before entering the intersection, but police said the e-bike continued through and collided with the passenger side of the bus.

A 14-year-old boy from Dover, believed to be the passenger, was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead. His name has not yet been released. The 16-year-old operator of the e-bike, from Camden, was hospitalized with serious injuries. Neither teen was wearing a helmet, according to investigators.

The bus was driven by a 75-year-old man from Magnolia. He was not hurt, and all 21 elementary school students on board escaped injury.

Delaware State Police said the roadway remained closed for roughly four hours while the Collision Reconstruction Unit investigated and cleared the scene.
