Cash register theft has prompted a community alert as police try to track down the bold daylight suspect

NEWARK, NJ — A man slipped into a Newark business and helped himself to the cash register, making off with $610 while a store employee was momentarily away, according to city officials.

The theft occurred Thursday, May 1, at approximately 4:34 p.m. inside a business located in the 200 block of Emmet Street. According to the report, the worker had stepped away from the front office to handle an issue elsewhere in the store. That’s when the suspect entered, walked behind the counter, and took the money from the register.

The man is described as having a dark-brown complexion and was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt with the hood up, black shorts, and blue New York Yankees sandals at the time of the incident.

Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda, Sr. has called on the public to help identify the suspect. Authorities have released a description and are reviewing surveillance video from the area.
