Three teenagers have been arrested in connection with a violent confrontation involving police officers in Times Square on Friday night, Mayor Eric Adams confirmed Sunday.
The incident took place around 7:45 p.m. near West 42nd Street and 8th Avenue. Officers from the Midtown South Precinct responded to reports of a large-scale disturbance. While many individuals fled upon the arrival of police, a group of approximately nine people confronted officers, throwing items including metal objects and water bottles, according to police sources.
One officer sustained a minor injury during the clash. Authorities arrested three teenagers the following day, including a 16-year-old charged with riot, menacing, and obstructing governmental administration.
A 17-year-old was also arrested on charges including assault on a police officer, reckless endangerment, riot, and criminal possession of a weapon. A third teen was taken into custody and later released to their parents.
Mayor pledges further arrests in police assault investigation
During an unrelated event in the Bronx on Sunday, Mayor Adams addressed the incident, emphasizing that the investigation is ongoing and that additional arrests are expected.
“We’re not going to allow people to attack the symbol of our public safety, and those are the men and women who wear the uniform,” Adams told amNewYork. “We want all nine involved and brought to justice.”
The mayor commended detectives and frontline officers for their swift action. As of Monday, the NYPD continues to review surveillance footage and eyewitness accounts to identify the remaining individuals involved.
The case is being handled by Midtown South Precinct detectives with support from NYPD investigators across borough commands.
