Ortley beach lifeguards on duty for final weekend of season

TOMS RIVER, N.J. — This weekend marks the final opportunity for beachgoers to enjoy lifeguard protection at Toms River’s Ortley Beach and Shelter Cove Beach, according to a statement released by the Toms River Township Government.

Lifeguards will be on duty from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7, and Sunday, Sept. 8. After this weekend, the beaches will close for the season, and lifeguard services will be unavailable until next year.

The township is urging residents and visitors to take precautions when visiting unguarded beaches. “Those who choose to visit Ortley Beach or Shelter Cove Beach after they are closed for the season will be doing so at their own risk,” officials said in a statement. “There will be no lifeguards on duty when the beaches close for the season.”

The warning comes as the township emphasizes the dangers of swimming without lifeguard supervision, citing the risk of injury or drowning. Swimmers are strongly advised to avoid entering the water after this weekend.

Additionally, the Snug Harbor Community Pool, another popular location for local residents, has officially closed for the season as of this week and will not reopen until next summer.

While Toms River’s beaches have seen a steady flow of visitors throughout the summer, the end of the season typically signals the conclusion of lifeguard services, leaving beachgoers responsible for their own safety during the offseason.

Local authorities encourage residents to check township communications for updates on beach conditions and to respect all posted signs and warnings as the beaches transition into their offseason phase.
