TRENTON, N.J. — Two children were killed after a three-alarm house fire engulfed a three-story residence on the 300 block of Hewitt Street in Trenton early Wednesday, according to city fire officials.
The fire was reported just before 4 a.m. with dispatchers receiving reports that people were trapped inside the home. When firefighters arrived, they encountered heavy flames pouring from the structure as crews immediately launched rescue and suppression efforts.
Fire Believed to Have Started in First-Floor Living Room
Officials said the victims were a young boy and a young girl. An adult who was inside the home at the time escaped without injury.
“The adult, from what I was told, escaped the house unscathed,” Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Rice said.
Fire officials believe the blaze originated in the first-floor living room before rapidly spreading throughout the home. Investigators have not yet determined what caused the fire, and it remains unknown whether the residence had working smoke detectors.

Neighbor Tried to Save Children Before Crews Arrived
Deputy Chief Rice said a nearby resident attempted to fight the fire with a garden hose after learning children were trapped inside the home.
Despite those efforts and the rapid response by firefighters, the two children could not be saved.
Two Firefighters Injured Battling Blaze
The fire also injured two firefighters during the emergency response.
One firefighter suffered burns to the back of both legs and was transported for treatment, while another was treated at the scene for respiratory issues. Both injuries were reported as non-life-threatening.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
