Union Township, NJ — A small bear cub spotted alone along a busy stretch of Interstate 78 was safely rescued by state troopers after being found in a roadside ditch.

Update: The bear is being cared for by state officials until its release.

The incident occurred Wednesday at approximately 1:37 p.m. near milepost 12.2 on I-78 East, where troopers responded to reports of the animal.

Upon arrival, troopers located the cub by itself and determined it needed assistance. The animal was secured and transported to a nearby station.

Officials said the cub was later turned over to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection for care.

Authorities did not provide details on how the cub became separated or whether its mother was located.
