KEARNY, NJ — A violent multi-vehicle crash on the Newark-Jersey City Turnpike early Friday morning left two people dead and several others hospitalized, according to the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office.
The collision occurred shortly after 3:30 a.m. near 490 Newark-Jersey City Turnpike. Kearny police officers responded and discovered two heavily damaged vehicles: a BMW sedan and a Ford Transit Van.
Authorities said the male driver of the BMW and a female passenger were both pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 4:45 a.m. Their identities have not yet been released, pending formal identification and notification of their families.
The van, which was carrying nine individuals from Canada and New York State, was also severely impacted. Seven of the occupants were transported to University Hospital in Newark for treatment, while two were taken to Jersey City Medical Center.
One of the injured victims remains in critical but stable condition, officials confirmed.
Investigation ongoing by collision unit
The Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit is working alongside Kearny police to determine the circumstances of the crash. The cause and manner of death for the two victims will be determined by the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.
Prosecutor Esther Suarez released the details Friday morning and said the investigation is ongoing.
Authorities have not released further information about what may have led to the crash or if charges are being considered.
