BERKSHIRE, MA — On Friday, Tyler Sumner was convicted by a jury of his peers for Murder in the First Degree and Possession of Ammunition without a Firearm Identification Card. The verdict was delivered at the Berkshire Superior Court, with sentencing yet to be scheduled by Honorable Judge Flannery.
Tyler Sumner, a resident of North Adams, was found responsible for the death of Stephanie Olivieri, which occurred in the early hours of August 25, 2019. Pittsfield Police were initially called to the scene on South John Street due to reports of suspicious activity and gunshots. Upon arrival, officers discovered Olivieri severely injured in her running car, suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. Despite immediate medical attention, she succumbed to her injuries at Berkshire Medical Center.
Evidence presented during the trial suggested that Sumner was likely targeting another individual in the area, and Olivieri was tragically mistaken as the intended victim. The prosecution built their case with various forms of evidence, including surveillance footage, witness testimonies, and forensic data from the scene.
District Attorney Shugrue reflected on the case, emphasizing the tragic loss of Olivieri, who was preparing for her child’s birthday celebration when she was killed. The community and legal system now await the final sentencing of Tyler Sumner, hoping for closure in this deeply distressing case.
