STAMFORD, Conn. — A vehicle explosion behind Stillmeadow Elementary School on Friday afternoon triggered a city-wide police response and pursuit, ending with the arrest of two juveniles in High Ridge Park, according to the Stamford Police Department.
Authorities say the incident began around 2:30 p.m., when officers responded to reports of a blue Crown Victoria emitting a white powdery substance following a small explosion near the school. The vehicle, which resembled a police car, fled the scene as officers arrived.
Due to the suspicious nature of the vehicle and potential threat to public safety, Stamford police initiated a pursuit through the city. The chase concluded when the suspect vehicle collided with multiple police cruisers in High Ridge Park.
The two individuals taken into custody were confirmed to be juveniles who are not residents of Stamford. Both were apprehended at the scene of the crash. Their identities have not been released due to their age.
A subsequent investigation by the Stamford Police Bomb Squad determined that the powder was discharged from an onboard fire suppression system and was not hazardous. The department said there was no indication that Stillmeadow Elementary was specifically targeted.
Investigation rules out ongoing threat
Police stated the incident caused several motor vehicle collisions and resulted in injuries to both the suspects and responding officers. No injuries were reported among the public.
“While the situation ultimately proved non-hazardous, it was perceived by school staff and officers as potentially dangerous, and they responded accordingly,” Stamford Police said in a statement released on Facebook.
The department commended its officers for their “swift, coordinated response” in what was initially viewed as a high-risk scenario near a school during school hours.
The blue Crown Victoria is being held as evidence while the department completes its review.
