Vietnam veteran honored in Teaneck for decades of service to country and community

Teaneck, NJ – A Vietnam War veteran who once manned communications in the jungles of Southeast Asia is being honored by the Teaneck Police Department for his continued service to fellow veterans right here at home.

Mr. Lenny Hennig, who was drafted into the U.S. Army on January 11, 1968, is the final honoree this month in Teaneck’s series recognizing military service and community dedication. Hennig began his military journey with Basic Training at Fort Dix before advancing to infantry training with the elite 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He later received specialized communications training at Fort Lewis in Washington.

Deployed to Vietnam, Hennig served with the 278th Signal Unit, 4th Infantry Division at Camp Enari in Pleiku. Positioned beside Dragon Mountain, his unit was responsible for providing vital communication links across the base and into combat zones, both in the jungle and the air.

After completing his yearlong tour, Hennig returned stateside, but his service didn’t end there.

For the past two decades, he has led Teaneck’s Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1429 as Commander, continuing his mission to support veterans in the local community.

Town officials and residents have expressed gratitude for Hennig’s contributions, both in uniform and at home.
